Autumn Hum

An autumn afternoon in the Styx Valley, recorded live in the soft, golden light.

Moments of quiet, the distant snow on the mountains, an eerie juxtaposition of ancient ecosystem and clear fell coupes. The crickets sing on the edges of the forest, and after making the journey south-west, rest beckons. Despite the sleepy pull and hypnotic hum of the forest, a few songs were to be sung in the warm afternoon light.

These songs were performed live on an autumn afternoon, in the Styx Valley in Southern Lutruwita/Tasmania. Some of them are abridged, making room for environmental sound. Upon returning to Nipaluna/Hobart, backing vocals, electric guitar and piano were added to the live recordings, extra textures to intertwine with the hum of the forest.

Many of these songs are about change. The forest is always transforming as the seasons bring new textures, tones and moments of awe. As the leaves fall, and moments slow for winter’s hush, softer insights slowly gather and offer tiny comforts into the misty eve.
