New Soundscape: From the Moss

From the Moss is composed of field recordings captured in Takayna/Tarkine temperate rainforest in North-West Lutruwita/Tasmania. Field recordings are captured with an ambisonic microphone to include the gentle details of birdsong, rain, and wind through trees.

Takayna/Tarkine is Australia’s largest temperate rainforest; approximately 495,000 hectares containing ancient myrtle, eucalypt, leatherwood and pine, with much still vulnerable and at risk. Takayna encounters threats due to mining, logging and its vulnerability to change in climate. The low hum of a nearby mine is present in these recordings, as a tailings dam proposal threatens new sites within these ecosystems.

These recordings were undertaken on the unceded lands of the Palawa Pakana. The Bob Brown Foundation is currently campaigning for a World Heritage listed Takayna National Park, guarding critical habitat for species and protecting vitally important clean air and waterways. This would secure the permanent protection of the 495,000 hectares of Takayna in a World Heritage listed national park, returned to Aboriginal ownership.
